After breakfast at the hotel, depart to explore two of Sri Lanka’s most iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Begin with a visit to Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the spectacular 5th-century rock citadel built by King Kashyapa (477–495). Rising dramatically from the flat plains of Sri Lanka’s dry zone, Sigiriya is considered the country’s most unforgettable landmark.
This remarkable archaeological site once formed the inner stronghold of a 70-hectare fortified royal city, surrounded by moats, ramparts, and sophisticated landscaped gardens, including the famous water gardens at the base of the rock.
During the ascent, admire the world-renowned Sigiriya frescoes, known as the Heavenly Maidens, preserved in a sheltered pocket of the rock and accessed via a spiral staircase. From the summit, enjoy sweeping panoramic views that highlight the fortress’s strategic brilliance and dramatic setting.
Continue to the ancient archaeological city of Polonnaruwa, the medieval capital of Sri Lanka and a key highlight of the Cultural Triangle. At its height in the 12th century, Polonnaruwa represented one of the greatest achievements of early Sri Lankan civilization.
Its extensive and exceptionally well-preserved ruins provide a fascinating insight into medieval urban planning, religious life, and artistry. The compact layout allows for a thorough exploration in approximately three hours.
Do not miss Gal Vihara, an extraordinary collection of Buddha statues carved directly into granite rock, regarded as a masterpiece of Sri Lankan stone craftsmanship.
In the evening, return to your hotel.
Dinner and overnight stay at Wild Grass Nature Resort or similar boutique accommodation.
After breakfast at the hotel, depart towards Kandy, traveling through the scenic landscapes of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle.
En route, visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 1st century BCE and built by King Walagambahu. This is the most impressive and extensive cave temple complex in Sri Lanka.
The site consists of five caves adorned with more than 2,000 square meters of painted walls and ceilings, representing the largest continuous area of ancient paintings in the world. Inside, discover over 150 Buddha statues, including a monumental 14-meter-long reclining Buddha carved directly from granite rock.
Continue with a stop at a spice garden in Matale, where you will learn about Sri Lanka’s world-famous spices, traditional cultivation methods, and their use in local cuisine and Ayurveda.
Arrive in Kandy, beautifully set at an elevation of approximately 480 meters and surrounded by misty hills. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kandy was the capital of Sri Lanka’s last independent kingdom, which resisted colonial rule for over two centuries.
Enjoy a guided city tour of Kandy, including:
The sacred Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Buddhism
A drive through the scenic Peradeniya University campus, one of Asia’s most beautiful university grounds
A panoramic viewpoint along Upper Lake Drive, offering stunning views over Kandy Lake and the surrounding town
In the early evening, attend a traditional Kandyan Dance performance, culminating in a spectacular fire-walking finale, showcasing ancient rituals and vibrant Sri Lankan cultural traditions.
After the performance, check in to your hotel.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mountbatten Bungalow or similar boutique accommodation.
After breakfast at the hotel, depart for a meaningful wildlife experience at the Elephant Freedom Project (subject to availability at the time of booking confirmation).
This small, family-run elephant sanctuary is dedicated to providing a safe and humane environment for rescued captive elephants. Unlike traditional elephant attractions, the project does not offer elephant rides. Instead, it focuses on respectful interaction through walking alongside elephants in their natural surroundings.
The project currently cares for one elephant who previously worked for many years in the harsh wood-logging industry, and its primary mission is to offer long-term care, dignity, and protection.
Proposed Half-Day Morning Programme
09:00 – Welcome and safety briefing
09:15 – Cleaning the elephant’s resting area
09:30 – Guided walk with the elephant
11:00 – Tea break
11:30 – Visit to the dung paper recycling facility
12:30 – Washing the elephant
13:15 – Lunch
14:00 – End of programme
Please note: As this is a family-run initiative, the project reserves the right to adjust the schedule or cancel visits without prior notice due to operational or personal reasons.
Return to Kandy in the afternoon.
En route, visit the renowned Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya, located just outside Kandy. This beautifully landscaped garden is one of the finest in Asia and is especially famous for its extensive orchid collection, featuring over 300 orchid varieties.
The gardens also showcase spice plants, medicinal herbs, towering palm trees, and house the National Herbarium. Covering 147 acres at an elevation of approximately 460 meters, the gardens thrive in a climate supported by around 200 days of annual rainfall.
Return to the hotel in the evening.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mountbatten Bungalow or similar boutique accommodation.
After breakfast at the hotel, depart toward the central highlands of Nuwara Eliya. En route, visit a tea plantation and tea factory, where you will learn about the cultivation, processing, and grading of world-famous Ceylon Tea, from freshly picked leaves to the final aromatic brew.
Arrive in Nuwara Eliya, often referred to as “Little England”, a charming hill station where British tea planters once settled. Located at approximately 2,000 meters above sea level, it is the highest town on the island and is known for its cool climate, colonial-era architecture, and lush green landscapes.
Enjoy a panoramic sightseeing tour, discovering its elegant gardens, historic buildings, and scenic surroundings that define Sri Lanka’s tea country.
Later, transfer to the railway station to board the local train to Ella, widely regarded as one of the most scenic train journeys in the world.
Please note: Train seats are subject to availability at the time of booking confirmation and can only be reserved up to 30 days in advance. Delays, cancellations, or changes cannot be guaranteed due to operational conditions.
Continue your journey through misty mountains, tea-covered slopes, and picturesque valleys as you descend toward Ella.
Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and check in.
Dinner and overnight stay at 98 Acres Resort or similar boutique accommodation.
Enjoy a free day on a half-board basis, allowing you to relax at your boutique hotel and fully appreciate the surrounding mountain landscapes.
A chauffeur-guide and private vehicle are available with an allowance of 100 km per day.
Suggested Excursion: Ella Highlights
We recommend exploring the scenic Ella area, one of Sri Lanka’s most picturesque highland destinations.
Begin with a hike to Little Adam’s Peak (1,141 m), named for its resemblance to the sacred Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada). The trail is gentle and accessible, making it suitable for most fitness levels.
The walk leads through lush tea plantations, rice fields, and small waterfalls, gradually ascending to the summit. From the top, enjoy breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views over the Ella Gap and surrounding hills.
This hike is best undertaken in the morning, when the light is soft and clouds begin to roll in.
Nearby, visit the iconic Nine Arches Bridge, a masterpiece of British-era engineering completed in 1921. Built entirely of stone, brick, and concrete—without the use of steel—the bridge remains in active use today and offers a stunning setting for photography as trains pass through the jungle-clad valley.
Optional Morning Excursion: Lipton’s Seat (Haputale)
For those seeking an extended excursion, consider an early-morning visit to Lipton’s Seat near Haputale.
This legendary viewpoint overlooks Sir Thomas Lipton’s original tea plantations and, on clear days, offers views across five provinces in southern and eastern Sri Lanka. Morning visits provide the best visibility before mist settles over the hills.
Return to the hotel in the afternoon to relax and enjoy the serene highland atmosphere.
Dinner and overnight stay at 98 Acres Resort or similar boutique accommodation.
After breakfast at the hotel, depart toward Yala National Park, Sri Lanka’s most famous and one of its largest national parks, renowned for its rich biodiversity and dramatic dry-zone landscapes.
Embark on an exciting jeep safari through Yala National Park, home to a remarkable variety of wildlife and bird species. The park is especially known for its population of leopards, making it one of the best places in the world to spot this elusive predator in its natural habitat.
You may also encounter elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, jackals, and numerous species of storks and migratory birds, all thriving within the park’s forests, lagoons, and open plains. The contrast between rugged terrain and abundant wildlife creates a truly memorable safari experience.
After the safari, continue to your lodge and check in.
Enjoy a relaxed evening surrounded by nature.
Dinner and overnight stay at Leopard Nest or similar boutique accommodation.
After breakfast at the hotel, depart toward the south coast of Bentota.
En route, visit the historic Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved colonial fortresses in Asia. Built by the Dutch in the 17th century, the old city within the fort walls offers a fascinating blend of European architecture and South Asian traditions.
Enjoy a walk along the ramparts from Utrecht Bastion to Flag Rock Bastion, with panoramic views over the Indian Ocean and the ancient harbor—believed by some to be the biblical port of Tarshish. Pass notable landmarks such as the District Court, the original fort entrance, and the Dutch Reformed Church, dating back to the 17th century.
Continue past the New Town of Galle, which was heavily affected by the 2004 tsunami and is now home to the rebuilt International Cricket Stadium, symbolizing the city’s resilience and renewal.
Optional Excursion (Supplement USD 15 per person): Madu Ganga Boat Ride
An optional stop can be made for a boat safari on the Madu Ganga, a biodiverse river estuary surrounded by dense mangrove forests and dotted with 64 small islands.
During the boat ride, observe a variety of bird species, troops of Toque Macaques, and impressive Bengal Water Monitors, which can grow over six feet long. One of the islands features a small Buddhist monastery, decorated with traditional sculptures and artwork, including a 150-year-old palm-leaf manuscript. You may also witness villagers extracting cinnamon oil using traditional methods.
Continue to Kosgoda to visit a Turtle Hatchery, where conservation efforts focus on protecting endangered sea turtle species and releasing hatchlings into the ocean.
Arrive in Bentota, transfer to your hotel, and check in.
Dinner and overnight stay at Club Villa or similar boutique accommodation.
After breakfast at the hotel, check out and depart toward Colombo (rooms must be vacated by 12:00 PM).
Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy a panoramic city tour of Colombo, Sri Lanka’s largest city and commercial capital. Colombo presents a fascinating blend of modern urban life and colonial-era heritage, shaped by centuries of international trade. Thanks to its strategic port location on ancient East–West trade routes, the city was known to merchants over 2,000 years ago, later becoming the capital under British rule in 1815.
The sightseeing tour includes views of key historical, cultural, and commercial landmarks such as:
The historic Fort area
The vibrant Pettah Quarter, known for its bustling markets
The elegant Cinnamon Gardens district
Galle Face Green, Colombo’s iconic seaside promenade
Viharamahadevi Park, the city’s largest green space
Additional religious and colonial-era monuments along the route
Important note: As a general guideline, arrival at the airport is required at least 3 hours prior to departure.
