Itineraries Of The Day

Your journey begins with a scenic 4×4 departure from Underberg at 07:00 (with convenient collection available en route), as you ascend the legendary Sani Pass — a thrilling mountain road famed for its dramatic switchbacks, misty cliffs, and panoramic views. Pause at the charming Sani Top Chalet, one of Africa’s highest lodges, for a warm cup of tea while standing “above the clouds.”

Continue climbing over the rugged Black Mountain Pass and take a short walk to the Thabana Ntlenyana viewpoint, overlooking Southern Africa’s highest peak at 3,482 metres. The thin air, vast silence, and sweeping vistas make this one of Lesotho’s most awe-inspiring moments.

From here, descend into the Sehonghong Valley, a region of timeless natural beauty, dotted with shepherd huts and grazing livestock. Stop at “10 Riverside”, where you’ll enjoy a rich Basotho cultural experience — visit a Ngaka (traditional healer), explore the artefact house filled with local crafts and storytelling, and learn about Lesotho’s deep-rooted traditions and way of life.

As the sun begins to set behind the mountains, arrive in Mokhotlong — once known as “the most remote outpost of the British Empire.” Settle in for a hearty dinner and a restful overnight stay, surrounded by the tranquil highland air.

Dinner and overnight in Mokhotlong.

After a hearty breakfast, continue your journey through Mokhotlong, once famously dubbed “the most remote village in the British Empire.” Enjoy a short stroll down the town’s main street, where you may spot the strikingly rare Spiral Aloe, Lesotho’s national plant, nestled among the mountain flora.

The adventure continues to the historic St James Mission, a cherished landmark of faith and craftsmanship in the highlands. Step inside to admire the hand-painted ceiling, a vivid artistic expression that reflects generations of devotion and skill in this remote mountain community.

From here, the route winds back through the majestic Sehonghong Valley, where dramatic ridgelines and open skies provide ideal conditions to spot the elusive Bearded Vulture, one of Africa’s most regal and endangered raptors.

Pause for lunch at the Sani Top Chalet, enjoying panoramic views from the “rooftop of Southern Africa.” Then begin your scenic descent of the iconic Sani Pass, a thrilling drive that winds back into South Africa’s Drakensberg foothills.

Arrive in Underberg around 16:30, marking the end of an unforgettable two-day Lesotho 4×4 highlands adventure.
