







Depart Underberg at 08:00 in a 4×4 vehicle (with en route collection available if required) and begin your ascent up the spectacular Sani Pass, one of Southern Africa’s most iconic mountain roads. Wind through dramatic switchbacks, misty cliffs, and cascading streams, stopping at Sani Mountain Lodge — home to Africa’s highest pub — for a warm cup of tea and panoramic views above the clouds.
Continue the climb over the Black Mountain Pass, pausing for a short walk to a scenic vantage point overlooking Thabana Ntlenyana, the highest peak in Southern Africa at 3,482 metres above sea level.
The journey unfolds through the breathtaking Sehonghong Valley, where rugged peaks meet tranquil pastures and shepherds guide their flocks through timeless landscapes. Arrive in Mokhotlong, once known as “the most remote village in the British Empire.” Enjoy a guided stroll through the town’s main street, spotting the rare Spiral Aloe — Lesotho’s national plant — and exploring colourful local stalls that reflect the spirit of the highlands.
As evening falls, travel onward to Oxbow Lodge, your peaceful retreat nestled in the mountains. Enjoy a hearty dinner and a comfortable overnight stay, surrounded by the crisp air and serenity of the Maloti highlands.

After breakfast, depart Oxbow Lodge and begin your return journey through the Mokhotlong Highlands, travelling once more along one of Lesotho’s most scenic mountain routes. Stop at the historic St James Mission, an architectural treasure of the highlands, where the remarkable hand-painted ceiling tells a vivid story of faith, art, and craftsmanship in this remote mountain community.
Continue your drive through the spectacular Sehonghong Valley, keeping an eye on the skies for the rare and majestic Bearded Vulture — one of Africa’s most elusive and endangered birds of prey. The sweeping vistas and rugged ridgelines make this section of the route a highlight for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.
Arrive at Sani Mountain Lodge for lunch, where you can relax and take in panoramic views from Africa’s highest pub before beginning your descent of the iconic Sani Pass. Wind your way down through hairpin bends and misty cliffs, returning to Underberg around 16:00, marking the end of your unforgettable Lesotho mountain adventure.
