Your journey begins with a scenic 4×4 departure from Underberg at 07h00 (collection en route if needed), as you ascend the legendary Sani Pass, winding through dramatic switchbacks and misty cliffs. Pause at the charming Sani Top Chalet for a warm cup of tea, perched high in the clouds. From there, climb further over the rugged Black Mountain Pass for a short walk to a viewpoint overlooking Thabana Ntlenyana—Southern Africa’s highest peak at 3,482 metres.
The adventure continues through the striking Sehonghong Valley, a landscape of sweeping vistas and timeless beauty. Along the way, stop at “10 Riverside” for a rich Basotho cultural experience, including a visit to the local Ngaka (traditional healer) and a look inside the artefact house that holds stories of Lesotho’s deep-rooted heritage. As the sun begins to dip, arrive in Mokhotlong—a town once considered the most remote in the British Empire—for a hearty dinner and restful overnight stay.
After a hearty breakfast, the journey continues with a drive through Mokhotlong — once dubbed the most remote village in the British Empire. Enjoy a short stroll down the town’s main road, where you’ll spot the strikingly rare Spiral Aloe nestled among the mountain flora. From there, travel on to St James Mission, where the church’s hand-painted ceiling tells its own vivid story of faith and craftsmanship in the highlands.
The route winds back through the majestic Sehonghong Valley, keeping a lookout for the elusive and regal Bearded Vulture soaring overhead. Lunch is enjoyed at Sani Top Chalet, with sweeping views from the rooftop of Southern Africa, before descending the iconic Sani Pass and returning to Underberg around 16h30.
